Recommended books / DVD's

There are many yoga books to choose from. Here are a few that I have found particularly useful. They are all available from Amazon, Yogamatters or Ian MacDonald in Oxford.

Ashtanga practice books

Ashtanga Yoga 'The Practice Manual' - David Swenson (an excellent reference book when learning both Primary and Intermediate Series)

Ashtanga Yoga as it is - Matthew Sweeney (an excellent quick reference guide to primary, intermediate, advanced A and B series with a good introduction too)

Yoga Mala - Shri K Pattabhi Jois (Gurruji's original primary series guide published in 1962 and translated in 1999)

Ashtanga practice DVD's

John Scott - Ashtanga Yoga DVD (useful reference guide to Primary series)

Danny Paradise - River of the Soul DVD (for pure inspiration Danny's the man!)

Books offering a wider view of yoga

How Yoga Works - Michael Roach and Christie McNally (an easy read introduction to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and what yoga's about in its fuller sense)

The Wisdom of Yoga - Stephen Cope (a book that brings Patanjali's Yoga Sutras into a modern context, making them accessible and relevant to real life challenges)

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali - Chip Hartranft - my personal favourite translation and commentary on this key Yoga text.

Bringing Yoga to Life - Donna Fahri (a beautifully written book on 'the everyday practice of enlightened living')

Light on Life - BKS Iyengar (an exploration of the impact of yoga on life from a very respected teacher)

The Heart of Yoga - TKV Desikachar (a great overview of yoga including a translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali)
